About Lily Spruce
Lily Spruce is the product of Genevieve Roja's realization that planning a wedding needn't be an exercise in excessive consumer spending. In the throes of wedding planning in 2007, Genevieve became concerned about buying things used solely for the wedding and then promptly discarded. She cringed at all the paper that would be wasted with her RSVP cards. As someone employed at an environmental health organization planning community forums and book readings under tight budget restraints and which mandated solutions on how to green or zero waste these events, how could she unconscionably toss all her personal and professional values aside for the sake of her wedding?
To her delight, Genevieve found many workarounds. She shopped Craigslist and other wedding blog classifieds for things she could use for the wedding and after. She bought paper, ribbon, fabric and notions from a reuse center and returned leftover items post-wedding. Her husband-to-be created an online reservations system so that no excess paper would be needed. In support of independent artists and crafters, she shopped Etsy.com for the groomsmen's ties and met a jeweler who created one-of-a-kind necklaces and earrings for the bridesmaids. She asked her caterer if she could utilize local produce and food, and if they could also compost the food post-reception.
Genevieve was "that bride"—and figured other brides-to-be like her were out there too, wanting to go green, wanting to lessen the environmental impact of their big day, wanting to reduce and reuse in creative and unique ways that added up to an organic, but still glamorous, event. And so in Fall 2009, Lily Spruce was born.
